Why we do not show a “live price”

Gold's spot price moves every second of the trading day, and sites that print a confident “live price” without a real data feed are often showing you a stale or invented number. We take the honest route: you type in the current spot price per troy ounce (one search for “gold price today” gives it, from any major financial site), and our calculator does the part that is actually easy to get wrong — karat purity fractions and weight conversions — precisely.

The one formula behind everything

Melt value = spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce) × your item's weight in grams × its purity (karat ÷ 24). Every page on this site is that formula, a chart, or advice about the negotiation that happens after it.
