Gold Weight Converter (Grams · Troy Oz · Dwt · Tola)
Convert between the units gold is actually traded in — including the troy ounce that confuses everyone.
The units, decoded
| Unit | In grams | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Troy ounce (ozt) | 31.1035 g | Spot prices, bullion, coins |
| Gram (g) | 1 g | Jewelry scales, most of the world |
| Pennyweight (dwt) | 1.5552 g | US pawn and jewelry trade |
| Tola | 11.6638 g | South Asian & Middle East gold markets |
| Ounce (avoirdupois) | 28.3495 g | Kitchen scales — NOT for gold prices |
The troy ounce trap
Gold is priced in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier than the ounces on a kitchen scale. Pricing a troy ounce as if it were a regular ounce (or the reverse) is a ~$250 mistake at today's prices on a single ounce. When a dealer quotes “per ounce,” always ask: troy? For gold, the honest answer is always troy.
